Mayview State Hospital
Created at the end of the 19th century, Mayview State Hospital was once situated in a peaceful country setting. Since then, the city has grown up around it, but the campus still maintains its rural atmosphere.
Throughout the 20th century, the hospital continued to grow. At its peak, it held over 4,000 patients. Following the trend of deinstitutionalization in the 1970s, the population began to shrink, and the hospital gradually shut down, building by building. It closed completely within the last decade, but several buildings are still being used for non-psychiatric purposes.
